Recycled materials are often presented as a compromise: good for the planet, but rougher and less refined than new ones.

SCORIA, a pendant light by Adam Keprta at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, sets out to prove otherwise. It received a Top Design distinction for eco-design products in the 2026 European Product Design Award student programme.

The structural parts are made from recycled aluminium. The circular diffuser that softens the light is made from recycled plastic.

Those materials were chosen for performance as well as origin. They resist damage, last a long time and can be recycled again after use.

The result is a lamp with a premium appearance, designed to hold its own in contemporary interiors.

SCORIA explores what secondary materials can do in lighting, and makes a persuasive case that circular design can be desirable.
