Renters move often, and their furniture pays the price. Flat-pack pieces loosen with each move, and much of it is eventually thrown away.

CANEST, a nomadic furniture system by Yefan Liu and a student team, is designed for that life, and for the pets that share it. It received a Top Design distinction for eco-design products in the 2026 European Product Design Award student programme.

The system integrates a desk, a chair and storage, adapting to compact homes and frequent relocations.

Its material comes from agriculture. CANEST is made from sugarcane bagasse and corn cobs, bound with natural lacquer instead of synthetic adhesives, which the team says supports healthy indoor air.

Construction is hardware-free. Interlocking parts allow intuitive assembly, flat-pack transport and easy replacement of individual components.

By pairing bio-based materials with a demountable structure, CANEST offers a low-waste answer to a mobile way of living.
