The laundry basket is one of the home’s most overlooked objects. It is bought for capacity, placed out of sight and rarely thought about again.

OYA, designed by Søren Rose Studio for the Danish brand Gejst, gives it a reason to stay in view. It was a winner in the household products category at the 2026 European Product Design Award.

The basket is made from perforated metal, a material more often found in industrial settings. Here it brings durability without heaviness, and the perforations keep the form visually light.

The defining detail is the structure. Two shells overlap, and where their perforations meet they produce a pattern that reads almost as a flower. An industrial sheet becomes decorative purely through how its layers are arranged.

The practical side is kept simple. A 75-litre cotton bag sits inside, and the basket comes in Warm Grey and Dark Grey, tones that settle easily into a bedroom, hallway or utility room rather than shout.

Gejst, whose name translates as excitement or enthusiasm, describes its method as taking an ordinary product and stripping it back to something thrilling. OYA shows that approach at its most modest and convincing: a chore object that earns a place in the room.
