When a patient is bleeding during surgery, the delay between needing a product and having it in hand matters. Hemostats, used to stop bleeding, come in many types, and choosing the right one takes time.
J&J MedTech HemoStand, designed by Lauren Davison and the team at Modo, is built to shrink that delay. It received a Top Design distinction for medical products at the 2026 European Product Design Award.
The first change was location. The team moved hemostats out of the storage room and into the operating room, where they are needed.
The second was information. Quick-read, colour-coded labels help nurses identify the right product fast and make decisions under pressure.
Together, these turn a storage display into a surgical tool. Modo’s aim was to reduce the seconds between finding and fixing as close to zero as possible.
Modo designs carts for leading medical device companies. HemoStand shows how much that kind of everyday infrastructure can contribute to care.
