For a premature baby, an MRI scan involves a journey. The infant has to leave the neonatal intensive care unit, travel through the hospital and lie still inside a large, noisy machine.

ScanPod, designed by Mark Lait for Advanced Healthcare Technology, is built to make that journey as gentle as possible. It received a Top Design distinction in the healthcare category at the 2026 European Product Design Award.

The process begins in the NICU. The baby is moved from the cot into the pod and stabilised there before anything else happens.

The pod then carries the patient through the hospital to the MR unit, providing a safe, warm and quiet environment on the way.

Crucially, the baby stays in the pod during imaging and for the trip back. One continuous environment replaces a series of transfers, each of which could disturb a fragile patient.

ScanPod is a clear example of design measured by what does not happen: fewer moves, less cold, less noise.
