A bar cabinet is a piece of theatre. It stays closed most of the time and is opened for an occasion, so the act of opening deserves some attention.
Solidity, a bar cabinet by MW Design and wood designer Andras Meszaros, gives that moment a great deal. It received a Top Design distinction for home furniture at the 2026 European Product Design Award.
From the outside, the cabinet reads as metal. It is in fact solid oak, finished in a crackled lacquer that suggests aged, weathered steel. The rivets are hand-carved in oak to imitate forged fasteners, and exposed metal rods join the upper and lower sections.
The mechanism is the centrepiece. Each of the two doors opens independently through a custom steel gear system, operated by hand wheels that remain visible behind inset glass. A vault-style handle on top refers to the safes of the early twentieth century.
Inside, the mood turns. Warm oak veneer lines the interior, and hidden LED lighting switches on as the doors open. A cool, armoured exterior gives way to something intimate.
The illusion could easily become a gimmick. It works because the craftsmanship is real: the wood is carved, the gears turn, and the reveal is earned.
