In most products, empty space is what is left after the form is designed. It is a gap, not a feature.

VOID, a portable speaker by Rahi Seyedi, reverses that order. It received a Top Design distinction for wireless speakers in the 2026 European Product Design Award student programme.

Every decision starts from a central void. That space becomes the speaker’s handle, its main point of interaction and its defining identity.

Designing around a single purposeful opening turns negative space into function rather than decoration. The object is understood by what is missing from it.

Sustainability is part of the brief. VOID is built with recycled materials and designed for repair, so it can last longer than typical portable electronics.

Seyedi works across product, architecture and lighting. VOID shows an architect’s sense of space applied to something that fits in the hand.
